Meet the veterinarians of Thorn Avenue Animal Hospital
Joseph Clauss, DVM
Joseph Clauss is a co-owner of the Thorn Avenue Animal Hospital. Joe attended Orchard Park High School before receiving a B.S. in Animal Science and a Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine from Cornell University in 2011. His personal interests include woodworking, fitness, and cooking. Joe lives in Orchard Park with his wife Jessica, who is a veterinary chiropractor, and their daughter and son.
Peter Clauss, DVM
Peter Clauss is a co-owner of the Thorn Avenue Animal Hospital. Peter attended Orchard Park High School prior to receiving his B.S. in Animal Science from Cornell University. He continued at Cornell University and received his Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine. Personal interests include volleyball, outdoor activities, and reading. Professional interests include feline medicine, radiology, and neurology. Peter lives in Orchard Park with his wife Rose, and their cat Dexter.
Jan Freeman, DVM
Jan Freeman obtained a BS in Biology from the University of Michigan prior to her Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine from Cornell University in 1984. She began her career in mixed animal practice at the Springville Animal Hospital where she was an owner. In 1997, she joined Thorn Avenue as her longtime friend John’s first associate. Jan enjoys living in the woods, most anything outdoors or athletic and reading. She lives in Glenwood with her yellow labs, Maizy and Jaime. She has three daughters and seven grandchildren whom she travels to visit frequently.
Betsy Johnson, DVM
Betsy Johnson joined Thorn Avenue Animal Hospital in 2012. Betsy received her B.S. in Biology from Canisius college in 2008. She attended St. George's University to earn her Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine in 2012. Her personal interests include skiing, horseback riding, hiking and running. Betsy lives in North Tonawanda with her husband Nick, their two daughters and two sons, and their two dogs, Indy and Minnie.
Alyce Shaefer, DVM
Alyce Schaefer joined Thorn Avenue Veterinary Hospital in 2020. Born in Buffalo, Alyce graduated from Sacred Heart Academy High School. She stayed local to receive her BS in Biology at the University At Buffalo, prior to earning her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine in 2016 at Ross University. Alyce started her career in Tonawanda at Brighton-Eggert Animal Clinic before joining the Thorn Avenue family. In her spare time, Alyce enjoys traveling, playing volleyball and spending time with her family, friends, and pets all while never forgetting to cheer on Buffalo sports teams.
Nathan Tompkins, DVM
Nathan Tompkins joined Thorn Avenue Animal Hospital in 2018 after working in Tonawanda for the first 7 years of his veterinary career. Nathan is a Western New York native, graduating from Lewiston-Porter high school in 2003, Niagara University in 2007, and Cornell University for his Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine in 2011. His interests include spending time with his wife and three sons, playing baseball, and just about any other sporting activity. He also enjoys music and is a member of the Tonawanda American Legion Band.
